Magdalene Alva Joins Fondren as the Digital Media Support Specialist

Spotlight on Magdalene Alva: Using Graphic Design to Further Scholarship and Academia

Magdalene Alva, a new and dedicated member of the DMC team, brings a blend of creativity and resourcefulness to her role. With a non-traditional background that spans fine art and nutrition, Magdalene's path to graphic design is as diverse as it is inspiring.

Initially, Magdalene pursued and earned a degree in fine art before shifting gears to earn a degree in nutrition. However, her artistic inclinations eventually led her back to the creative field, where she found comfort and creative fulfillment in graphic design. This career choice allowed her to merge her passion for art with practical applications, making a tangible impact through her work.

Magdalene's journey to the library was driven by a desire for a deeper connection with Houston’s community. After freelancing for a period, Alva focused her sight on the university and its community, which proved to be a constant source of joy in her life.

As a Digital Media Support Specialist, Magdalene is responsible for teaching workshops, providing instruction to classes, and offering one-on-one support to students and faculty. She assists with various needs, from graphic design projects to technical support with equipment. Her expertise is particularly valued in helping students enhance their design work, especially in creating effective visualizations and figures.

Magdalene's favorite part of her role is her ability to apply her graphic design skills to support students' academic endeavors. She finds enjoyment in helping students improve their work and achieve their design goals.

In the coming years, Magdalene aims to expand the DMC's outreach and support services. She is particularly excited about incorporating data analytics and visualization into her workshops, enhancing the resources available to the Rice community.

She is also eager to explore the potential of AI in graphic design, staying at the forefront of technological advancements in her field.

Magdalene Alva is excited to collaborate on projects and encourages students, staff, and faculty alike to reach out with ideas. Her dedication and innovative approach make her an invaluable asset to the Fondren Library and the broader Rice University community.
